We had a such a good weekend. Running errands, bathing suit shopping, a spontaneous date with Josh last night and one of my new favorite things: hosting Sunday dinner with our nearby family.
So bathing suits… Does anyone else have the hardest time finding something good? I’m in a pretty okay place with my body, but I just fall apart when I get into the fitting room. I was really excited to see the new Lilly Pulitzer suits that just came out for summer, but was disappointed at the selection at my local store. I did end up buying these shorts to slip on over a cute white one-piece from J. Crew that I already have. If you have any leads on a pretty, patootie-covering, bathing suit for a tall girl, send it over!
Josh was so sweet on Saturday to realize that I was having a bit of a come-apart courtesy of LIFE and arranged a date for us last minute. He made reservations at a Birmingham restaurant that we’ve literally been talking about since before we got married. It was not overrated! The Fig Tree in Cahaba Heights was amazing! We ate all the gluten and ordered the fried green tomatoes (GLORY!), and the local beef burger with truffle fries. I am 100% a burger and fries girl and I will never apologize for that. The chef came out and chatted with us for a bit, he told us that his cows are fed red wine everyday and it really does something yummy to the meat, I picked up on the a faint wine scent from the first bite. It was delicious! I had to laugh, at one point the waitress came out and said she couldn’t find any more unsweet tea to refill my drink. Northern habits die hard, and only in the South I guess. We ended the night with rolled ice cream, it’s become one of our new favorite date desserts. Tell me, do you like to make a few stops on date night or do you go soup-to-nuts at the same restaurant? Oh, and I wore this H&M jumpsuit, it’s so cute and flattering in person and on sale for only $14 (in store)!
The past few Sundays it has just so happened that our house has been the spot for dinner. Josh’s brother and his wife live around the corner from us with their little baby boy and the few of us are the only family in town. Even though we’re close, we all are always running in different directions and its been so fun to just have them over for a nice family meal and catch up. I’ve loved finding simple, yummy menus and also the tradition of gathering on a Sunday afternoon. Last week I made meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and this week I made one of our favorite vegetarian meals, Joy the Baker’s Baked Eggplant Parmesan with (use both these recipes together and trust me on this!) Baked Polenta and Tomato Basil Sauce. Oh and a quick batch of gluten-free brownies with vanilla ice cream. See what I mean, so homey.
We’ve got a few busy days ahead of us before leaving for my parents cabin. Suitcases are about 75% full and the color scheme is decidedly red, white and blue. I need to stock up on snacks before the flights tomorrow. If there is one thing I’ve learned about flying with a munchkin, its lots of snacks! My mom is beside herself because all 10 of us kiddos and the 3 grand babies will be visiting this time. Hugo is just a wild animal these days and teething molars (help me) too, so I’m looking forward to him getting some quality time with his Sugar so that I can maybe sleep in or something. Haha! Who knows, I may actually even get to work on my tan and do some antique shopping this week… Wishful thinking!
Have a happy fourth of July!
