We consider ourselves very lucky to be living between several of America’s best small towns. Josh’s work often takes us on the road and the past few months have brought us to Fairhope, Alabama. We fell in love with this town a few years ago while filming “I Still Believe” and I’d hoped, but never thought, we would actually get to come back here (I can’t believe this was 3 years ago!) As we have settled into life as one of the “locals” again, at least I fancy myself that, Hugo and I are going to show you some of our favorite spots around town in our Fridays in Fairhope posts.
February is full on Mardi Gras mode here in the Mobile Bay area. They claim to have the oldest Mardi Gras celebrations and as soon as Christmas is over, the lights stay on and the purple, green and gold decorations go up! I have never celebrated Mardi Gras and was not very familiar with it until our time here, so this has been an education for me. One of the most iconic parts of the celebration is the King Cake. A very festive cinnamon roll-esque bread that is covered in icing and colored sugar. Inside the cake is baked a tiny little plastic baby and whoever gets the slice with the baby is “King” for the day. Hugo thinks this is funniest thing ever and those little plastic babies are everywhere!
Where we went today:
Today we stopped by the Fairhope Museum of History to see what was new. They have a new exhibit coming soon so part of the museum was under construction, but it didn’t stop us from checking out the old jail cell and the fire truck.
Around the corner is the newly opened location of Fairhope Chocolate. It was my first time in this shop and it is so lovely! The have freshly made chocolates, a bakery, gelato, coffee and slices of king cake! Hugo and I chose the raspberry cream cheese king cake and it was delicious. (P.s. We did not find a baby in our slice.)
Have you been to Fairhope, Alabama? If so, where are your favorite spots? Where should we go next for our Fridays in Fairhope?
