Our latest movie Jesus Revolution takes place in 1970s Southern California and while most of the film was shot in Alabama, we wrapped up the last few days of filming in Orange County. This meant that our entire cast and crew had to pack up and move across the country. And then start filming again just a few days later. It was a little more than intense!
I am always grateful when our little family is able to travel together. And we were very happy to be back in one of our favorite spots on Earth (Corona del Mar to be exact.)
Our first stop off the plane was In-n-Out. I’m pretty sure it was Hugo’s first chocolate milkshake and he was RUINED for the rest of the trip. We were pretty busy and I didn’t feel too badly since I was ordering the burger wrapped in lettuce, but after a few days I had to cut him off. We then switched to acai bowls for our preferred “fast food”.
Josh had to keep up a very tough schedule and with the restrictions as they are for film sets (very strict!) we would drop him off in the mornings. The rest of the day was ours to meet up with friends, my Auntie who lives nearby and enjoy the California sunshine. You’ll see several photos from set below. For inquiring minds, Hugo and I tested with negative results and followed all protocol and were allowed to visit for only a few specific scenes.
We spent the first few evenings taking long walks on the beach and doing a little location scouting with Josh. Balboa Island was such a fun spot and I made Josh stop at the iconic frozen banana stand. One of our favorite tv shows is Arrested Development and I need to remind you that “there is always money in the banana stand.”
My last few trips to California have been to LA with Josh for work related events, it had been a while since we were in Orange County and I’d forgotten how much I love it. It was the most beautiful time to visit and I was in awe of the sunsets and the beauty of driving up and down the coast. Hugo and I were ready to move there by the end of the week.
I was so inspired by the fruit trees everywhere (it’s amazing to me the things you notice as you get older. Forget about shopping at Fashion Island, have you seen the orange trees?!) My friend Catherine sent us back to our hotel room with a huge bag of citrus and it was delicious. We have plans to plant several fruit trees in our backyard this summer.
Behind the Scenes: Jesus Revolution
This scene is of a hippie music festival with Janis Joplin. Hugo was so excited and very serious about his role of helping keep the extras hydrated with, as he calls them “electric-lights” (electrolytes).
