Last weekend I completed my seasonal closet swap in anticipation of clearing things out and putting together my Fall/Winter 2023 clothing shopping list. It was a WHOLE THING and I spent about 3 hours doing so, but my goodness did it feel great to have that done!
If you’ve never done a complete closet clean out, I would highly recommend it. I start by bringing out my seasonal clothing tubs (I keep the alternate season in a set of large plastic tubs and then swap) and then take EVERYTHING out of my closet and onto the my bed, it really helps to see everything in one place. Then I sort by making piles to keep, toss, or give. For items that I’m not sure about I put into a pile under “comfort” to revisit next time. Everything is then is hung properly on hangers, folded and organized before it goes back into the closet.
I’ve been doing this for so long that it feels pretty natural for me to get in my closet and cull things quickly, but if you need help and you’re local to Nashville, send me a message and I’d love to lend my personal stylist skills to your closet.
For the past 2 years or so I’ve kept a pretty small capsule wardrobe on hand (we travel so much that I’m often living out of a carry on suitcase) and have taken advantage of a subscription to Rent the Runway. Did you know that they have more than just formal dresses? You can rent jeans, jumpsuits, coats, sweaters, etc! My subscription that lets me rotate through up to 10 new items of clothing a month. I can pause anytime I want, but my social calendar is so full that I’ve kept it going.
As I went through every piece of clothing I kept a notebook nearby and noted the things that needed to be replaced or was missing in my wardrobe. I noticed that I was needed a few basics and that some of my favorite items were looking tired. I added those to my list.
If you’re curious to see my fall/winter 2023 clothing shopping list, I’ve included it below…
Classic Style… My Fall/Winter 2023 Clothing Shopping List
- Casual Puffer Coat – My old puffer coat bit the dust and I need to find a new one before our trip to Wisconsin. I’m looking for a long, shiny, black, belted puffer coat. A tall order, but something chic and cozy for freezing cold winter days.
- A chic sweatsuit. I ordered the GAP runaround pant in black and I think it has potential to look pulled together with a sweater or sweatshirt and cute sneakers. I’ve had my eye on the Spanx AirEssentials set!
- New workout gear. I only have one pair of leggings and it may be time to replace them. An added bonus is that it’s a little easier to get back to the gym when you have fresh gear.
- A Striped Sweater – This is the one that I ordered.
- Casual Striped Tee – I ordered this, and I love this one too.
- Silver Jeans – I just love the silver jeans look! I think these will be gorgeous for Christmas concerts and parties with sweaters or a crisp white shirt and heels.
- Lady Jacket – I’ve had this jacket from Rent the Runway for almost 2 months and have worn it so many times. I ordered this casual version. J. Crew has a beautiful collection of cropped jackets.
- White Blouse – A basic that needed replacing for me. I wear a white blouse so often that it is worth it to me to have several different styles/shapes on hand, like this slim cut one.
- Black Blouse – This lace one is so lovely. I like the length and think it will look cool with denim or a more dressed up trouser.
Items to look for on Poshmark/Secondhand:
- White Nike Running Shoes
- Ballet flats – One of the most on-trend shoes of the season and such a classic too. Silver or red are colors I’m looking for.
- Dress Coat – Maybe something vintage, but in a high quality wool and with timeless shape.
- Black or cream sweaters – 100% cotton or cashmere are always a great secondhand score!
- Puffer vest
- Silk scarves – Lydia Millen is one of my newest favorite follows and she has inspired me to get back into scarves. I love watching her youtube videos, I find them so warm and funny and inspiring, in them you can see how casually she will just tie a scarf on and look amazing while doing it.
Extras – Items that I don’t need immediately, but will keep an eye out for:
- Sneakers – more of a fashion sneaker vs. running sneaker. I’m torn between Veja, Tretorn or a pair of Stan Smiths so that I can match with my son.
- Green Sweater – I have a pair of vintage wool chartreuse green trousers and I want to wear them with a green sweater for a monochromatic look.
- Platform sandals – I feel like Born on Fifth made these such a LOOK and I love it! I’m seeing them everywhere this season.
- Wide leg cuffed jeans – I love this these from Banana Republic. GAP was having a huge sale so I ordered this pair of wide leg jeans.
- Chunky cableknit sweater – Maybe it’s my Irish roots, or growing up with freezing cold winters, but I love a cable knit sweater. I ordered this one.
