I’ve found that Thanksgiving Outfit Inspiration is easy to come by, sweater dresses & boots, jeans & plaid blazers, etc. But what to wear to cook Thanksgiving dinner??? It has to be something a little more on the practical side, layers should be involved because kitchens get hot and shoes must be comfortable because you will be on your feet all day. What do you wear when you also want to look stylish and pulled together while doing it all?
Whatever your Thanksgiving scene is looking like this year, I’ve got you covered in the style department. Classic and chic outfit ideas for home cooks, whether you’re doing the heavy lifting (of large turkeys, of course) and making the entire meal or bringing sides and chasing kiddos. These outfits are elevated enough to take you all the way to the dinner table if you like, or have a backup outfit to change into while the turkey is resting.
May your turkey be golden, whipped cream perfectly peaked and your rolls well buttered this Thanksgiving!

What to wear to cook Thanksgiving dinner: The Classic Cook
If you’re the classic cook, then you are probably in charge of EVERYTHING! I pull so much of my inspiration from Ina Garten and Martha Stewart, even style inspiration. There are few things in life that I love more than sitting down with a stack of cookbooks and a paper notebook to compile lists of things to cook and their cookbooks are some of my favorites.
This is my “Modern Ina” outfit. I love this updated black denim with the crossover waist, and the oversized shirt in chambray denim. I would tuck in the shirt and scrunch up the sleeves to style it. These cute fur lined clogs are new from Hunter and I think would be great for being on your feet all day. In case you can’t make everything homemade, “store bought is fine” and you can bring it home in this cute market tote.
Pair wide leg black denim with a slim fitting cream tee shirt and silver ballet flats. The neckline is very flattering and I would wear my hair up to show off these beautiful silver drop earrings. The black and white basket tote is perfect for a last stop at the grocery store.
What to wear to cook Thanksgiving dinner: Friendsgiving
For friendsgiving you’re probably not cooking “everything”, but you’ll still be busy! Friendsgiving is usually a more casual holiday getogether, but as the hostess you’ll want to look chic and on trend.
I LOVE these wide leg cuffed jeans from Banana Republic. They are a very updated denim look and I think they’ll be so great for holiday dressing. I paired these with a jeweled button knit top from Boden and silver ballet flats and earrings. If you need an apron to finish off your look, this heirloom pumpkin print from Anthropologie is amazing!
I love this french-inspired look with silver jeans and a black cardigan. “A pop of red” is the thing this season and I love the red leather ballet flats for comfort and chicness. I would layer a black tank top underneath for when the kitchen gets overheated. A delicate necklace, silver drop earrings and a watch (for turkey baking purposes) complete this very simple outfit. Anthropologie has a beautiful line from Mimi Thorisson and I think this apron is just so elegant.
What to wear to cook thanksgiving dinner: A Family Feast
This is sheer chaos and probably the most fun. Comfort and whimsy are the key for these get togethers. Your day will probably starts with a turkey trot race and end with a football game with an unholy amount of macaroni and cheese somewhere in the middle.
If you’re not already following Chef Bae on Instagram, you need to be! She is a Jewish American private chef in Beverly Hills. She is such a fun person to watch and her recipes are amazing (try her healthy Levain cookie recipe) Chef Bae is always wearing a jumpsuit and I think she’s onto something with how great they are for long cooking days. This black jumpsuit is perfect with a heavy duty denim apron, cute sneakers and a macaroni noodle necklace just for giggles.
This AirEssentials sweatsuit from SPANX is on my wish list. It comes in several colors and petite and tall sizes and is so flattering. After eyeing this set for months, I think I’m ordering this for myself. It will be perfect for road trips, lounging with the family, etc. I found these cheeky “butter knife” earrings, a pretty mug for sipping coffee (or diet coke, I won’t judge) while watching the parade and sneakers (these look so high-end!)
