Have you seen the play dough kits that are popping up everywhere? There are so many creative moms with ideas for kids crafts, I love following along and have been inspired by the themed play dough kits. A Valentine’s Day craft seemed like the perfect thing to put in Hugo’s gift this year.
I have a complicated past when it comes to play dough. My own mother HATED play dough, like, would not allow it in the house, avoid inviting friends to birthday parties if their mother was known to gift it, not let us play with it, would throw fresh containers in the trash, the whole thing. (Sorry mom for outing you on the internet…) I remained neutral on the issue, until… Until, I had a very active kid who rarely sits still and will actually quietly play for a few minutes if given the brightly colored gunk. As it turns out, I’m a huge fan!
We have tried a few different homemade dough recipes (nothing against the store stuff, it’s just that sometimes we’re at home and feeling crafty) but this one is a new one for me. Two ingredients, just canned frosting and powdered sugar. I love that it’s gluten free and edible. Although I did not tell Hugo he could eat it, so he has no idea that an entire sugar rush was sitting in front of him. We will see how long that lasts!
I found the little tackle box at Hobby Lobby and thought it would be perfect to re-use and swap out with different colors and trinkets (similar here on Amazon LINK or HERE). All of my craft supplies are from Hobby Lobby and Target.
How to make Edible Play Dough with Frosting
1/2 cup of Frosting (any flavor)
1 to 2 cups of Powdered Sugar
Food Coloring
Mix powdered sugar into frosting until smooth and not sticky. Add more powdered sugar as needed. Add several drops of food coloring and mix until combined. Wrap tightly in plastic until ready to use.
To Build a Play Dough Kit
Choose a theme and a color scheme (I chose a chocolate truffle box theme)
Beads, tiny figurines, pompoms, pinwheels, whatever you have! I promise your child will look at these toys with new eyes if they are presented in a little box.
Add cookie cutters, rolling pins and scoops
Fill up those compartments and enjoy!
